If you are wondering why your fireplace refuses to turn on, then check out the five most common reasons why this is happening below.
Reasons Why A Fireplace Won’t Turn On
The power source is always the first thing you should check when your fireplace won’t turn on. With that being said, let’s look at all the things that may result in the fireplace refusing to light properly.
1. Tripped Circuit Breakers
Look to see if the circuit breaker has not been tripped. Circuit breakers are one of the many safety features in modern electric and gas fireplaces. These safety sentinels are designed specifically to trip and break the power supply in the unfortunate event of any malfunctions or power surges.
If you have an electric fireplace, for example, it’s best to check the circuit breakers that are associated with the fireplace. If it has tripped, reset the breaker and restart the fireplace. If the circuit continues to trip, though, it’s best to contact a professional fireplace maintenance technician in your area.
2. Spark Igniter Failure
The ignition or spark igniter ultimately produces the first flame that ignites the fuel within your fireplace. If the igniter malfunctions or gets dirty, it can prevent the gas from properly igniting.
Check the igniter switch for any visible signs of debris, damage, or wear and tear. Clean the igniter with a soft brush or microfiber cloth, if necessary. If the igniter still fails to produce a spark, it’s time for a replacement.
3. Visible Fireplace Issues
Check around your fireplace for any obvious warning signs. A strong scent could indicate a potential leak. If this is the case, call the fireplace professionals as soon as possible.
An empty clicking noise occurring when trying to light the fireplace means there is a spark igniter issue. It’s important to always remain vigilant with your unit.
4. Power/Fuel Supply
Again, checking the power source should be your first move when the fireplace fails to ignite. Ensure your power switch is indeed turned on. Next, check to see if the connecting cord is plugged in firmly.
For a gas fireplace, the gas supply valve needs to be turned on. If you have not used the fireplace in quite some time, you may need to expel some air from the pilot tubing. Try holding the pilot button down for a few minutes, at this time.
5. Check The Thermocouple/Thermopile
Inspect the thermocouple or thermopile in the event none of the aforementioned measures result in the fireplace turning on properly. The thermocouple is a metal probe responsible for monitoring the temperature and gas valve.
This electrical safety device needs to be placed precisely to optimize performance of the unit. Modern gas fireplaces come with a thermopile for accurate electric voltage generation and temperature-sensing.
