Direct vent fireplaces are the most common venting method used today by homeowners. It is so popular because of its flexibility, efficiency, and safety features. Learn more about this fireplace type below.
How Does A Direct Vent Fireplace Work?
With direct vent fireplaces, a pair of rigid flues will be nestled inside one another. They will be installed in sections that range from 4″ to 48″ in length, featuring 90° and 45° angled elbows. These elbows ultimately allow for flexibility when positioned. An inner flue will then be surrounded by an outer flue, typically 6 5/8″ or 8″ in diameter.
When a gas fireplace is started up, exhaust passes through the inner pipe to the outdoors. The outer pipe, meanwhile, brings in some fresh air for combustion purposes. This will be transmitted directly to the bottom of the sealed firebox, where it eventually ignites the unit. The outer pipe also helps to insulate the combustible components that surround the area.
Direct Vent Fireplace Benefits
This fireplace will be completely sealed off from the home’s interior, featuring a high-temperature glass panel and protective screen. These features are in place to keep any flames or combustion byproducts away from your home’s air.
These vents are routed directly from the firebox through the wall and to the outdoors. This fireplace type also offers optional side and top venting routes, making them compatible with any home design.
Why Choose To Install A Direct Vent Fireplace?
Homeowners tend to love the fact that direct vent fireplaces come in an array of sizes. They will efficiently produce heat nearly everywhere within the home.
Given the venting flexibility, range of styles, and the fact that a chimney is not necessary, these fireplaces work well for any home type.
